The disciples... His students... those closest to Jesus and those within the inner circle who knew more about His power and miracle-working ability than anyone else... found themselves in a boat being tossed around by a storm.
Overly concerned for their safety and entirely gripped with fear, the friends of Jesus look for Him for rescue.
And Jesus is found sleeping.
Seeping.
They wake Him with these words, “Lord save us! We’re going to drown!” To which the Son of Man answers, “Why are you so afraid? You have such little faith!”
And I imagine those “brave” men. “Umm.. we’re afraid because we’re surely going to die.” And I picture Peter... the one I resonate with best... saying the words loudest, “You better do something! Don’t You see what’s happening here!”
And the answer is: He does.
He sees it.
The storm in your life.
And the storm in mine.
And He’s not riveted by the appearance of breaking waves and harsh winds.
He’s not devastated by the hazardous external conditions that inwardly plague distrusting spectators.
Because His concern is not to minimize outward conditions. His target is to maximize inward climate.
His interest is heart transformation.
Because He doesn’t see the storm the same way we see it.
I would tell it to a close friend last evening: this... this hard thing happening... is simply an open door. It’s an invitation to see from a better perspective.
Because if I’m to do what the Father is doing and say what the Father is saying, then I must insist upon seeing storms the same way He does.
As an invitation to co-labor with Him. To exert the power within me by the Holy Spirit to eradicate the storm and see, instead, that all is gift and all is an occasion for heart growth and soul transformation.
I will choose today more wisely. To see the storm differently. To behave in a way that redirects others to a Jesus worthy of following and reintroduces a more peaceful way of living that navigates difficult weather more successfully.
